The story of how he breaks off his relationship with the professor is a secondary plot line in The Lady of Bolton Hill. People who are curious about Bane can read about his early life in The Lady of Bolton Hill, where he was a seventeen-year old trouble maker. ![]() ![]() Although I originally intended it to be the second book in a trilogy, my publisher preferred it to be a standalone book. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Under the dome novel![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But no one in Springfield had their hands cut off by the dome’s sudden descent or crashed a plane into it or drove his car full speed into it or had the pacemaker in his chest explode when he got too close (the dome emits a mysterious, low-frequency electrical charge). He picked up the premise again in the ’80s, setting it inside an apartment building under the tantalizing title The Cannibals, but that attempt also fizzled.īy the time King finally licked Under the Dome, The Simpsons Movie had beat him to the idea of a town trapped under unbreakable glass. King started toying with the book - about a small New England town named Chester’s Mill that suddenly becomes trapped beneath an invisible, impenetrable, inexplicable dome - in 1976, and many faint traces of The Stand course throughout. The novel is a monster, but it moves like a short story, devoid of the bloat and wordiness that has plagued the beloved author’s latter-period work. “I tried to write a book that would keep the pedal consistently to the metal,” Stephen King writes in an afterword to Under the Dome, his massive new novel - his 48th! - an explanation for why you will carry this heavy, bulky book everywhere, eager to gobble up a few more pages whenever you can. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Guinness 2023![]() from tech innovators and pioneering space tourists to the latest planetary landers and the new James Webb Space Telescope - the largest of its kind
5/30/2023 0 Comments George washington ron chernow![]() Probing his private life, he explores his fraught relationship with his crusty mother, his youthful infatuation with the married Sally Fairfax, and his often conflicted feelings toward his adopted children and grandchildren. Chernow brings to vivid life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods. A strapping six feet, Washington was a celebrated horseman, elegant dancer, and tireless hunter, with a fiercely guarded emotional life. In this groundbreaking work, based on massive research, Chernow dashes forever the stereotype of a stolid, unemotional man. A laconic man of granite self-control, he often arouses more respect than affection. ![]() ![]() With a breadth and depth matched by no other one-volume life of Washington, this crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.ĭespite the reverence his name inspires, Washington remains a lifeless waxwork for many Americans, worthy but dull. From National Book Award winner Ron Chernow, a landmark biography of George Washington.Ĭelebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Legacy of ashes by tim weiner![]() ![]() ![]() In 514 pages of text, supported by 154 pages of endnotes, he describes a 60-year record of unremitting failure, not only in specific covert missions gone wrong but also in the Agency’s “central mission: informing the president of what is happening in the world.” He finds the Agency’s annals “replete with fleeting successes and long-lasting failures,” and concludes that “the most powerful country in the history of Western civilization has failed to create a first-rate spy service.”Īs one would expect of a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist for the New York Times who has covered the intelligence beat for 20 years, Weiner writes skillfully and dramatically, frequently marshaling direct quotations in support of his arguments. ![]() Tim Weiner’s thesis in this book is conveyed by its title. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Wicked fox book review![]() ![]() Three months after reading Night of the Dragon (the Shadow of the Fox finale), I needed a little more foxiness in my life, so this hit at just the right time. ![]() I had heard of the book before, and seen it in book stores, but had never gravitated toward it until Chloe from Books With Chloe talked about it. I do, however, watch and read tbrs for readathons to get new recommendations, and that’s how I found Wicked Fox by Kat Cho. I know that I don’t do well for time-specific reading challenges, so I don’t participate in them. Rebel that I am, I will not be contained to timelines for reading challenges. There’s a fun reading challenge going around the internet starting today called Koreadathon, the focus being on reading books by Korean authors and featuring Korean characters. ![]() ![]() The stage musical adaptation included the song in the score, among several other original numbers composed specifically for that production.
